Justin: Welcome to MPA’s Tech Table. I’m Justin.

Diana: And I’m Diana.

Justin: And we’re your hosts. We’ll be serving up a heaping spoonful of all things tech.

Diana: We promise, it’ll be easy to digest. Well hello there, it is Thursday.

Justin: It is Thursday. Were you not sure there for a second what day it was?

Diana: Well, I was going to say Theme Thursday.

Justin: Well, it is Theme Thursday here at the TechTable. We’re going to talk about ice cream sundaes.

Diana: One of my passions in life.

Justin: Yeah, you are an ice cream girl.

Diana: I love ice cream.

Justin: It’s true. So, at first, you have a little history on the ice cream sundae.

Diana: Yes, yes. Well, the ice cream sundae, specifically, is a sweet ice cream dessert. Basically it’s usually scoops of ice cream or it could be soft-serve, you know and then covered with some sort of toppings. Later on in our broadcast today, we’ll have some ideas of some interesting toppings for you rather than just hot fudge and stuff like that. Just kind of an interesting little tidbit here that there’s several different towns that claim to have been the birthplace of the sundae.

Justin: Oh, sure.

Diana: And so.

Justin: Everyone’s trying to get a scoop of that.

Diana: Oh! So, the contesting has been happening in these places- Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Justin: Uh-huh, Two Rivers.

Diana: Plainfield, Illinois.

Justin: I know it well.

Diana: Evanston, Illinois.

Justin: Been there.

Diana: New York City.

Justin: I have not been there.

Diana: New Orleans.

Justin: New Orleans. That’s interesting. Quite a variation of towns there.

Diana: Yes, there’s even more. Ithaca, New York. Cleveland, Ohio and Buffalo, New York.

Justin: Ah, Buffalo.

Diana: Yes. So, I don’t know what’s right.

Justin: Right. So, why’s it called a sundae?

Diana: Well, you know, the thing about that is they might have said, they don’t know for sure.

Justin: They don’t know for sure.

Diana: That’s why I’m stumbling right now.

Justin: That’s okay. Well, you know.

Diana: But what I’m reading is it was possibly because it was a weekend treat.

Justin: Oh, right. Yeah.

Diana: Also, they think it was derived from the German word, sonnntag. Sonntag, which means Sunday. But there’s also a German word, <zinde, zinda. Zinda>. Yeah. Which literally translates to the word sin and may, yeah, it may be alluding to the rich caloric count.

Justin: Right because it’s so bad for you.

Diana: It’s a sinful delight or something basically. So, I don’t know.

Justin: Interesting. Well, I like the one where it’s enjoyed on the weekend as a treat. That makes sense. People used to have treats once a week. I have one once a day.

Diana: Yeah.

Justin: Yes, it’s true.

Diana: So, here’s some really fun things that you can top your ice cream sundae with. You may not have tried this, so it might be something. Fresh, buttered popcorn.

Justin: That’s interesting.

Diana: I would do that.

Justin: Yeah, you would.

Diana: I would do that. How about caramel and pretzels?

Justin: That sounds good.

Diana: Smoked almonds. Bittersweet hot fudge. Try some of these things.

Justin: Yeah.

Diana: Now, here’s one I don’t really feel like trying. Very thinly sliced salted black licorice.

Justin: Yeah, I mean you’re not a licorice fan.

Diana: I’m not.

Justin: I like licorice though, but I wouldn’t put it on ice cream probably. I don’t know.

Diana: How about crunchy potato chips and chocolate.

Justin: Yeah, I’ve always like potato chips crunched up and on things.

Diana: Salt and pepper.

Justin: That’s interesting. Not sure I’d try that.

Diana: Real maple syrup.

Justin: That would be good, of course.

Diana: That would be good. That would be good. And then finally, here’s one that I do think would be intriguing. Habanero pineapple sauce. Finely chop up the habanero, removed the seeds, stems and the ribs. Boil with one can of crushed pineapple until the sauce turns light brown and starts to caramelize.

Justin: Oh, sure. That sounds good. That could be interesting. Yeah.

Diana: I’d try that.

Justin: There’s some interesting varieties there. I also see olive oil, lemon zest, and flaky sea salt which could be interesting. You know, people, you know, things might be better than you’d think they would be.

Diana: Just, you know, try something interesting on your ice cream sundae this weekend.

Justin: That’s right. Until next time.

Diana: Take care.
